Death In The Gunj Movie Review

Winter in the year in 1979. Our story follows a young man (Shutu) on a road trip with his family.  He is a painfully shy young adult. A regular trip with his family leads to his life falling apart. A story of transitioning into adulthood. Shutu is played by Vikrant Massey.

A reflection of the family dynamics in the midst of a vacation where everyone is in close quarters whether they like it or not.

Vikrant does a great job of leading us on the journey of emotions of the life and mind of Shutu. He is the quiet, reflective introverted type while his family is loud and weird.

Shutu has a conflict of identity and is in the search of what masculinity is for him. He struggles with navigating his life and the societal norms. Shutu begins to debate the importance of his part in his family and in society at large.

His family is very dysfunctional and isn’t supportive of him in any way or form. They are harsh, and inflicting with their words even to the point of emotional and verbal abuse. These words are especially geared toward Shutu by his male relatives.  These behaviors from Shutu’s family lead him to withdraw and feel totally alone. Even though, he is with his family.

Shutu does relate to one person however. He is close with his young cousin. Other than that, he feels all alone and like he had no one on his side.

Eventually, everything catches up to Shutu the insults the mean pokes and he has a breakdown.

The film is a deep look into everyday how we individually treat though in our immediate sphere. As well as the society’s negative input even on a daily basis how it does affect others even to the point of harming their life not just emotions and well-being.

This is a dark, depressing, moody, and melancholia filled film. It certainly captures what our lead Shutu goes through. The mask of trying to but on a brave face when everything seems to be overwhelming and the last things you want to do it be with people.

One of the most the anticipated Indian movies of the summer. It has already received  great reviews since just coming out.

This is Konkona Sen Sharma’s directorial debut. She already has had a great acting career.

It was filmed in McCluskiegani in Jharkhand. Many of the families there are of mixed culture. Predominately, the families there migrated from Kolkata and other countries making this is a diverse community. Our film “A Death In The Gunj” is based about a true story and a death in McCluskieganj.

Sarkar 3 Movie Review

“Sarkar 3” Angrier Than Ever.

This the third installment of the Sarkar Political Crime Thriller series. Which include Sarkar, Sarkar Raj, and now Sarkar 3.

The series takes place in the realm of politics and crime within the Marathi. Which, is India’s far-right party. The film follows the life of a commanding governmental character.

These films started to be released in 2005, 2008 and took a big break until Sarkar 3 was released.

However, the films series hasn’t been without controversy.  It’s rumored that one of the characters is based on the nephew of a political leader which is suspecting the series is based on political leader Bal Thackeray and his relationships.

The films series has been one of the highest-grossing series in the history of Indian film. Sarkar 3 is projected and expected to reach beyond that in it’s time in theaters. Which, is very good since it’s estimated that the budget for the film was over five hundred fifty million dollars.

Furthermore, as a series, it has also been much awarded and celebrated. These awards include best film, best director, actor, and background music.

This film was a surprise of sorts as the director had stated there wouldn’t be the third installment of the film. Which, is especially true since the last film was released over nine years ago.  Many of the fans were already gearing up to view it when this announcement came out.

Amitabh Bachchan, Surpiya Pathak, Abhishek Bachchan the main cast have returned for the final film. Though, some of the original actors will not be returning.

Ravi Shankar is the arranger and composer for this film. The soundtrack contains seven tracks. The album is produced by Eros Now Music.

Overall, the critics are seeming to have mixed reactions to the film. For a film series, they seem to enjoy it okay. But, as the final film, many critics had been expecting more action and more of a favorable conclusion.

So many are split you either love the film or could do without it.

However, one thing is for sure is that this film is certainly one of the most expected and anticipated films of the summer.

The epic series finds a good conclusion and many audiences will be pleased with the final installment.

So, if you are a fan of this series go out and see it. Since it’s a part of a series it doesn’t d very well as a stand-alone film. But, if you are interested in an action packed thriller you could view it.

Maatr Movie Review

Maatr is also known as mother. It’s a powerful film looking into the judicial and societal system in India in response to sexual assault.

A mother and her daughter and friend are out driving by themselves after a school function late at night. From behind them, they see a car following. The car and its drivers ram the girl’s vehicle causing it to wreck. From this point, the guys that are in the car kidnap the girls. They gang-rape the mother and the girls. The mother survives the horrible ordeal but the daughter dies.

Mother takes it upon herself to track down those who raped and killed her daughter.

She seeks out help for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. She goes to the police, the judges, and other governmental organizations. She has nowhere to turn to. The offenders even threaten her and her family if she continues her fight for justice. Even, the husband doesn’t do much to defend his wife in the aftermath of the incident.

She remains steadfast in her cause and she begins to investigate other cases herself. She trains and prepares herself to be the one to bring these wrongdoers to justice. She, in essence, takes the law into her own hands. She tracks them down and executes the greatest punishments all without blinking an eye.

Ravenna Tandon gives a powerful performance as the mother of the slain girl. This is Tandon’s first film in a long while. So, audiences will be glad to see her on their screens one again.

You really can see the ranges of emotions that a mother would go through in this situation. Ranging from grief, shock, hopelessness, then to anger, and vengeance.

At times, especially during the sensitive scenes, the movie is hard and uncomfortable to watch. But, as these are real and true happenings it helps remind what is really going on the in the world.  The movie even goes as far as proclaiming Dehli, India as the “rape” capital of India on the trailer. As the trailer states, “In India, a total of 34,651 rape cases were reported in 2015. Only 5-6% of rape cases are ever reported.” These a very shocking facts.

But, the filmmakers should be applauded for bringing this issue and undeniable facts to light.

This movie would definitely be categorized as a revenge saga movie and it follows that story line closely.

The film was shot in 2016 in Delhi and Haryana.

Music for the film is composed and arranged by the Sufi Pakistani band Fuzon.

Powerful film bringing not only an issue throughout India but the world to the forefront.
