Begum Jaan Movie Review

The film is a remake of the 2015 film “Rajkahini” also by director Srijit Mukherji. It takes place in India’s Independence Period in 1948. Set in the sensual and gritty backdrop of a brothel during that time.

It’s also inspired by real life events during this period.

“My body. My house. My country. My Rules.” This is the mindset of Begum Jaan the brothel’s madam. The brothels houses eleven prostitutes.

During the time of war, tensions are high and compromises need to be made. The ladies of the brothel are caught right in the middle of the war between India and Pakistan. The governments decide to form a partition between the two countries. The line was known as the Radcliff Line.

The government ultimately then threatens them with eviction.

The story shows the deep relationships the women have with their home and each other. Showing just how far they will go to keep their home and everyone safe. They are really like a family and sisters who go to great lengths to prove their ability to defend their country and their home.

So, even though the official partition line goes right through their house they chose to stand their ground anyway. Their lives divided in the time of war.

They not only are a true example of people in that time surviving the partition but the bravery of these women to save their home at all costs.

Though India has received it’s freedom these women will not celebrate until they themselves are truly free.

Begum Jaan refused to move and leave her home. The government says that she can keep half of her girls in India while the other half must go over the line to Pakistan. Jaan, stands her ground not knowing the consequences.

Though they have opposition from every side they will not be moved. So, they train and get ready to protect their land.Begum Jaan, is played by Vidya Balan.

Begum Jaan, is played by Vidya Balan. Balan is as free-spirited as her character. She has always been a champion for women’s rights and empowerment.

“Begum Jaan”, showcases the talents of Srijit Mukherji who wrote and directed the film. Srijit is a National Film Award winner.

The music for the movie is composed by Anu Malik and Asha Bhosle.

The movie’s story will be told in two different languages. This will be a great asset and gain a greater audience for the film as well.

This is a woman empowering and women-centred film. It’s good to know stories like this where women stand up not just by themselves but together for a cause close to their hearts.

Poorna Movie Review

“Poorna : Courage Has No Limit”

The film is in inspired by the real life story of a 13-year-old tribal girl Poorna Malavath from Telangana a southern state in India.  Poorna, who went on to become the youngest girl in history to scale Mount Everest on May 25th, 2014.

Poorna is played by Aditit Inamdaar.  Poorna and her cousin Priya (played by S. Mariya). Are very close almost like sisters and they share a special relationship.

Together, they dream of escaping their low caste and poverty based life. They have the idea to run to the Social Welfare School as they hear will give them the education and basic necessities they need.

Regrettably, their plans are thwarted as Priya’s father finds out and catches them just when they are about to run off to find freedom.

Sadly, Priya’s father marries off to punish her and keep traditions alive. Thankfully, though, Poorna works tirelessly to try to make up her father’s mind to let her go to the Social Welfare School.

Through her time at the school, she comes to understand that her life really can get better and a good future awaits her. While at the school, she meets Dr RS Praveen Kumar (played by Rahul Bose) who shows her there is more to life and that Poorna has a purpose in this world.

Sometimes hard to watch, as it deals with many realities of those living in poverty today.

The good news is that hope prevails and one person’s destiny despite how the current path may look can be altered with perseverance, hope, and good mentors.

The film brings to light and discusses many important topics. These include child brides, discrimination of class and women and exploitation in a society of those who should be advocates for others because of their position.

A very sad scene was Poorna and her friends were playing a game where they talk about how each one is the poorest of the group. There is sweetness to the scene but it’s also heartbreaking at the same time.

A very heroic inspiring true story. But its focus on her upbringing and struggles more than her bravery in the tackling Mount Everest.

Features heartfelt realistic acting by the performers.

Aditi Inamadar delivers a powerful performance in her role as Malavath Poorna. Bringing sensitivity, innocence, determination, and hope to the role and the story.

It’s filmed and set in a Pakala village.

Poorna” is directed, produced, and is starring Rahul Bose. This is Bose’s second movie in the director’s chairs.

Music for the film is arranged and composed by Salim-Sulaiman. Salim is part of the talented composing due of him and his brother. They have worked on the music many of today’s Hindi films.

This year at the Palms Springs International Film Festival it was chosen to be screened. It also awarded on the list of the festivals 30 best films.
